Since its debut in 2001, the Mayor’s Cup Wheelchair Basketball Tournament has become one of the best places to see top-tier squads in this rapidly growing sport—in fact, it is the biggest event of its kind in the Northeast. This year’s tourney, organized by the NYC Sports Commission and the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, featured nearly 12 teams from around the country squaring off for the coveted Mayor’s Cup. Games were held at the Draddy Gymnasium of Manhattan College and Horace Mann High School in the Bronx from October 9 – 11, 2009. Mayor’s cup wheelchair basketball tournament was presented by the Barclays/Nets Community Alliance.
For the second year in a row, Athletes for Charity and students from the High School of Sports Management volunteered at the Tournament. The students were responsible for operating the scoreboard, clock, and keeping the scorebook. It was a great opportunity for the teens to gain experience in the sport industry while serving the community. Special thanks to HSSM students Nathaniel, Desmond, Kwymeik, Zuberi, Yvonna, Tarik, Franklin, James, Takiyah, Andrew, Sharif, Mike, Kevin, Terell, Jonathon, Donovan, Shaquille, Virginia, Joshua, and Madeline for volunteering their time.
The Mayor’s Cup Wheelchair Basketball Tournament is among the premiere events on the National Wheelchair Basketball Association’s (NWBA) national calendar. The National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) is comprised of over 200 basketball teams across twenty-two conferences and seven divisions. The NWBA was founded in 1948, and today consists of men's, women's, intercollegiate, and youth teams throughout the United States of America and Canada.
