"More Than a Game" follows the friendships and basketball exploits of James and his teammates at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, OH. The plot: "Five talented young basketball players star in this remarkable true-life coming of age story about friendship and loyalty in the face of great adversity. Coached by a charismatic but inexperienced player's father, and led by James, the "Fab Five's" improbable seven-year journey leads them from a decrepit inner-city gym to the doorstep of a national high school championship. Along the way, the close-knit team is repeatedly tested — both on and off the court — as James' exploding worldwide celebrity threatens to destroy everything they've set out to achieve together."
It was inspiring to hear James talk about the poverty and displacement he experienced as a child and about his attachment to his mother, who was a teenager when he was born. The film also showcased quite a bit of archival video which made it even more exciting to watch.
Approximately 10 Athletes for Charity students, who were also selected as NikeGameChangers, were invited by Nike, Inc. to attend the New York Premiere of “More Than a Game” held at the School of Visual Arts. Following the film, director Kristopher Belman, James’ former high school coach Dru Joyce II and other cast members, joined James on stage to discuss the film and entertain questions from the audience.
