Osi Umenyiora and Gibril Wilson of the New York Giants volunteered to attend a meet and greet with the “littles” of Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC, which in fact turned out to be a surprise birthday party for the two players who both celebrate their birthdays during the month of November. Unbeknownst to the players, everyone from staff to the youth and their parents were in on the surprise. The reaction of the two players was priceless.

The event was a result of a collaboration of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC and Athletes for Charity, Inc. who donated the decorations and specialty made cakes which showcased each player’s jersey numbers. Also in attendance for the meet and greet were teammates Curtis Deloatch and Myniya Smith who joined the birthday celebrants in signing autographs for over 50 “littles” of Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC (www.bigsnyc.org) is the preeminent organization whose mission is to provide mentors to children who need a caring, adult role model in their lives - a special friend who can help to expand their horizons and enrich their futures. BBBS’s volunteer mentoring programs consists of a diverse group of men and women who volunteer their time, talents and energy to support BBBS's programs for children and youth, working to improve the lives of the individual children as well as their families. Many children in New York are vulnerable children who may not be able to reach their full potential in growing up - youth who lack inspiration and experience to move beyond their daily survival to experience positive youth development.

With caring adult support during the crucial times in their life, children will be equipped to develop their skills and knowledge to become an important contributor to their community's future. The Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program is proven to be effective in helping children make important decisions. It has been proven that the program impacts positively on children's academic performance, diminishes violent behavior, and delays the use of drugs and alcohol. The on-going friendships increase self esteem, improve relationships with family and other adults in the children’s lives, invite a more positive outlook on life and a better feeling about their future, and much more.
